THE finals of the annual mixed doubles open tournament of Tavistock Tennis Club were completed last Saturday ? they are traditionally played later than the other tournaments so as to maintain competitive play.

Both matches were keenly fought and surprisingly had the same scores. There have also been two friendly matches.

Main event: Pat Warne/Phil Harbottle beat Jane Colegate/John Jackson 6-4, 6-4. Plate: Anne Bruce/Rod Watson beat Babette Jackson/Mike Prout 6-4, 6-4.

Recent friendly matches: Tavistock won 7-1 (on a straight mixed basis) away against Yelverton where Liz Loosemore gallantly played on after an injury in the first set. Team: Liz Loosemore/John Burgess and Babette/John Jackson. Lost 5-7 (on the basis of mxd, Ld and Mnd) away against St Budeaux which was a close match hingeing on a 5-6 short set.

Team: Sue Parsons/Simon Thomas and Gaynor Pollard (playing in her first match for the Club)/John Burgess.

l The annual presentation of awards ceremony for the P&D League took place on September 19 at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth, attended by almost 150 players and friends.

MC for the evening was David Williams, fixtures secretary to the league, who said that the league had had another good season with some competitive matches and thanked all who participated. The PD&L were appreciative of Tavistock for hosting the Devon County Junior Event which could not be held at Ivybridge in the usual way because of major building work there with the upgrade of the facilities.

Plymouth LTA chairman Steve Hitch congratulated David Williams and Junior League secretary Dudley Tolkien for their efficient organisation of the competitions to make it such a successful year and thanked all the clubs for entering and the committee for all the work behind the scenes.

It was not an outstanding year for the club but all teams maintained their positions in both senior and junior divisions with the ladies? C team runners-up in division 5 and the juniors? A team runners-up in division 1.

There were awards for senior Anne Bruce, as a consistent player throughout the season in division 5 and monthly merit awards for juniors Sara Whynman, Tom Bruce, Peter Allan and Peter Bloomfield.
