IT wouldn't be the same New Year's Day in Hatherleigh without the familiar sight of a number of Walruses dipping into the icy waters in Island Park.
Despite the cold and a chilly wind, more than 20 brave members of the Walrus group splashed about in the cold waters for five minutes to raise money for the benefit of local clubs and organisations.
To add to the fun this year there was a 'Dr Whom' theme and there were dippers dressed as Daleks and Cybermen — just like a recent Christmas episode of the BBC's Dr Who, there was also more than one doctor making an appearance.
There was also a Dr Whom Tardis, made of cardboard, but that mysteriously vanished during the day.
Organising for the event takes place in September and this is the 23rd year the Walruses have taken to the waters on the first day of the new year.
Adrian Drew, the chairman of the Walruses, told the Times: 'There was not much water because there has not been a great deal of rain lately. It was only between four and 18 inches deep, depending where you were.
'However, we had a lot of fun splashing about.
'It was most enjoyable, especially with around 100 people there to cheer us on.'
Already £650 has been collected and Walruses are hoping that the final total will be between £2,500 to £3,000.
Among the charities to benefit will be the Hatherleigh Guides, Hatherleigh football and cricket teams and other local good causes.
