SOME years ago I resolved to do all my Christmas shopping in Tavistock, and have in the main achieved this. Last Saturday week, a day which I imagine to be one of the main shopping days in the year, I wondered why I bother! The pannier market which advertises trade until 4.30pm was packing up at 3.45pm, and two other shops I visited were also closed despite advertising Saturday closing at 5pm. It could not have been a lack of customers as the town was seething with people. Add to this the number of establishments which stayed closed on Dickensian Evening and one must ask if these shops really want to survive? Chris Dicker 14 Watts Road Tavistock
