MAY I be given the opportunity to share with your readers a topic that has been troubling me since Christmas. I refer to the C word. Cancer. During the festive season, there was hardly an evening when Cancer Research UK did not broadcast lengthy, expensive, peak-viewing advertising on the television. This charity is arguably one of the wealthiest in the UK. So, why should they not take advantage of the season to top up their coffers? Do the dedicated people who work tirelessly to raise funds for cancer charities, often in response to personal loss, want their money spent in such a profligate way? What I would like to know, in the light of recent news, is when are cancer research and drug company industries going to take responsibility, because in my opinion 'industry' is exactly what they represent. Only this week, we are told that vital drugs are to be withdrawn, sacrificed on the altar of affordability. The drug companies cry, we have to recoup our research and development costs. So the millions raised by public subscription for research does not count or has it just gone on feeding the machine? I submit that milking the proverbial cow is the name of the game. Why else have prices quadrupled in the past year alone? As important as cancer undoubtedly is, I, for one, will be supporting local charities, who do not take advantage of the Christmas season and show more accountability. David Mason Tavistock
