I WONDER how many people were told they could not vote due to council?s paperwork and Royal Mail, or other reasons. I moved house back in September, when a form came through (Register of Electors 2005), I crossed off the previous occupiers? names and entered our own, this I put in our local post box. In late February I received a letter from the council, that they had only just got hold of this form and there was another form to fill in. This was all filled in, signed and dated March 3 and sent first class from our local box again: March 11 was the cut off date. Then on April 19 we had another letter saying that we were unable to vote as they had only received that form on April 15. At the bottom of this letter was a sentence about if you were registered at the previous address you may still be able to vote, so I rang about this as I was still in the same borough, but because this form (Register of Electors) was sent back as left/house empty, we were not registered. After this I went to a local candidate?s office to find out if there was anything I could do. They thought they might be able to claim against Royal Mail for loss of votes and would let me know what happens, so far I have heard nothing. This is the first time I have not voted and feel much cheated. Name and address supplied
