The Whitchurch Wayfarers Cricket week endured a very wet time. Things had started so well, with the seconds recording their first win of the season and the firsts recording an emphatic nine wicket win away at Exeter Civil Service.

On Sunday Devon and Cornwall Over 50s were due to have played. As the coin went up, the rain came down and that was that for the day.

A game was possible on the Monday as Mendip Acorns returned. Whitchurch batted first posting a total of 179 for 9 in their allotted 40 overs. Principal scorers were Credicott (48), Olivier (34) and Heatley 27. Sibiya the star for Acorns with 3 for 18.

The Acorns reply was dominated by Hunt. Whitchurch toiled away keeping runs down but didn't get enough wickets to put the pressure on.

Hunt carried his bat for a majestic 123, with the next top scorer Palmer getting 25. Acorns won by eight wickets with nine balls to spare.

Tuesday should have been evening league matches, but a total washout meant that a point was enough for the junior team to win the league.

On Wednesday, Ryde Isle of Wight were the visitors.

Despite poor weather, the game was started, with Ryde choosing to bat. Birchall took full advantage of the short boundary posting 136. Support came from Blackman with 64, as Ryde closed on 293 for 9. Whitchurch's leading wicket taker was Damian Cummings with 4 for 39.

As tea was taken the heavens opened and the game was rained off.

Conditions on Thursday looked more promising, although this proved to be a false dawn.

Cornwall Over 50s returned, this time to play a club side. Opting to bat, Cornwall made a steady start, before losing a couple of wickets. Chetwynd them hit a quick fire 52 not out, until the rain came. Despite an early tea, there was no further prospect of play.

Whitchurch would like to thank Mansbridge and Balment for their sponsorship of the Cricket week.

Since then, all matches have been rained off.

With two Devon League games left, the Wayfarers first XI require one win to join local rivals Yelverton in promotion to the D division.
