THE traditional Boxing Day Hunt held by Spooners and West Dartmoor Hunt set off from Bedford Square in Tavistock on Wednesday amid protests from anti-hunt groups.

Snow and ice on the moor meant conditions for hunting were not favourable, the hunt caught one fox before calling it a day in mid-afternoon.

Anti-hunt protesters from the League Against Cruel Sports gathered in the town centre brandishing banners and placards calling for the banning of bloodsports.

Hunt organisers said they were pleased with the turnout considering many hunt followers did not want to take their fresh horses up on the moor for what would have been their first meeting in almost a year, when the conditions were made difficult by snow and ice.

Spooners and West Dartmoor Hunt will be holding their next meeting at Postbridge tomorrow, Saturday.
