I CAN?T believe that I was the only person shocked and saddened by the Tavistock Times headline story ?Trees to face axe following danger fears?. (May 1).
Not again; how many more glorious trees must we see destroyed just in case a member of the public, at some indeterminate time in the future, is damaged by a falling tree? That being the case perhaps the local authority should cut down every tree in Tavistock just in case! No, no no I didn?t mean that!
Remember those beautiful beech trees that used to spread their
glorious mantle over Plymouth Road, sadly now only a memory.
From your report it would seem that a further 12 mature trees are to be felled in one massive cull.
The visual impact upon the area will be appalling, but the negative impact upon the ecological environment will be devastating, to wildlife in general but birds and insect life in particular. Trees play a major part in our lives too, cleansing the toxins from our over-populated and polluted towns but also adding an aesthetic quality to our lives, particularly now when they are clothed in that brilliant green mantle of new growth.
The town council, over recent years, has been responsible for cutting down so many of our most beautiful trees and in so doing changing the vista of our lovely town, what a legacy for the next generation.
Please, please citizens of Tavistock make your voice heard, save our trees before it is too late.
