AN application to build a new housing estate on the edge of Tavistock was given the thumbs-down by West Devon?s planning committee last week.
Wimpey and Westbury Homes had submitted an outline application to construct approximately 145-150 homes on land at the Manor, on Old Launceston Road.
The site itself includes the ruined Tavistock Manor, an area of parkland, woodland and pasture land.
Although detailed plans had been reserved for a later date, the planning committee was asked to consider access on to the site, which at present is off Old Launceston Road. The outline application included an access to the site in the same road, via a new roundabout opposite Inswell Court.
The committee was told 21 letters of objection had been received to the development of the site.
Tavistock Town Council has also objected, stating the application should be rejected because the site, at present, is still outside the Local Plan.
The planning committee agreed the application should be considered as premature, pending the outcome of the new Local Plan Review.
The committee heard the Manor site is still the subject of public consultation and sustained objections had been received to it being included in the new Local Plan.
