OKEHAMPTON Golf Club held the Three Ball Team Open Stableford on July 12 with entries from all over the South West. The scoring was as brilliant as the weather with the home team of David Keir, Del Nash and Roger Slee winning with 85 points; second was Guy Mitchell, Andy Kirby and Chris Ball 80pts, and third Simon Gregory, G Ticehurst and Kevin Harkness 79pts. First place in the Visitors Category was M Tillbrook, A Goodaire and D Foster from Looe with 80pts. Second B Axford, J Westaway and R Daniel from Holsworthy with 79 on the back 9 from J Bradnock, I Percival and M Garnsey from Exminster and Crediton also 79pts. In seventh place from Torquay was J Brooks, D Relf and S Storey 79 again decided on the back 9, in eighth place also decided on the back 9 J Flavin, R Slack and Neil Penfold 79pts. July 15 was a busy day for the Captain of the Club Barry Hodges as it was his Captain?s Day. It was a different format this year being a Three Ball Texas Scramble. A most enjoyable team competition, and the winning team was a mother and son with friend who blew the opposition away. Kevin Pedrick, John Mansell and Kath Mansell had a wonderful round of gross 56 net 52-4! They were in the lead from early on and nobody could match this fantastic score. The nearest in second place was Terry Steer, Richard Jones and Ted Boswell with gross 60 net 55-6. Third with gross 61, net 57-1 was Malcolm Hill, Kevin Harkness and Lyn Hazelton; fourth Alan Hawking Gareth Pengelly and Fred Cooke, gross 62 net 58-2. Fifth G Carpenini, Mike Charlesworth and M Aggett gross 63 net 58-4. Sixth Bill Phillott, Dawn Phillott and Sam Hurdwell gross 63 net 58-5. Seventh David Northcott, J Gillard and Chris Ball gross 63 net 58-7. Eighth Del Owen, Graham Moysey and Malcolm Hooper gross 62 net 59-2. Ninth Barry Coaker, Kevin Cornwall and Del Nash gross 63 net 59-6 and tenth Andy Kirby, Oliver Kirby and G Mitchell gross 65 net 59-8. The ladies played a fun competition on Monday, again a Texas Scramble. The winners were Kath Mansell, Sally Griffin and Lorna McCurrach net 63-25; very close in second place were Chris Stevens, Eileen Piper and Gladys Thatcher net 63-4. Wednesday saw the ladies playing their Away Day at Whitsand Bay. The weather was good, (just as well being right on the coast), playing a three ball better ball stableford, all the ladies enjoyed the different course with the winning team of Doris Jewell, Chris Turner and Lorna Rolfe playing exceptionally well to win with a fantastic 83 points. In second place were Lin Atkinson, Pat Kirby and Janet Hatch with 81pts on the back 9 from Dawn Phillott, Maureen Willcocks and Jo Boswell also 81pts. Friday was serious golf again with the Creasy Team away at Tiverton. Chris Stevens went first and won her match 3-2, second out was Sally Griffin who lost 2-3, third out was Doris Jewell who had a good fight but lost 1-2, next was Pat Kirby who had a wonderful 5-3 win. Gladys Thatcher went all the way to the 18th but unfortunately lost one down. Eileen Piper (Vice Captain and team captain) came in at the last moment as reserve but sadly lost 2-3, last out was Maureen Howe (Captain) also had a good battle and won one up on the 18th. Though this was a 3-4 loss, the first loss this season, the points convert to 9 for Okehampton and 10 for Tiverton.
