STEVE Graham's Classic Jazz will be performing at Plymouth jazz Club this weekend. Steve Graham formed the band in 2005, to play the exciting hot music of King Oliver and other bands of the 1920's New Orleans, as well as the classic rags of Scott Joplin and his contemporaries. The musicians are chosen for their affinity with the style of the period, but the band does not set out to reproduce slavish copies of the original recordings: instead the aim is to create a driving, swinging ensemble sound that is both vital and sensitive. Classic Jazz is led by trumpeter Steve Graham, whose expressive trumpet playing ranges from the hot and dirty to the refined and melodic. He is joined by Mike Denham on piano who is an acclaimed exponent of classic ragtime, boogie- woogie and stride piano styles. John Wurr on clarinet and alto sax is highly regarded as one of the UK's most versatile reed players. Tom Whittingham on trombone is a natural musician and has an instinctive feel for the jazz music of the period. Providing imaginative support for Steve's lead is Dave Martin as second cornet. The rhythm section is completed by John Baker on banjo, who is well known in the South West for his relaxed lift in his rhythm, and drummer Ron Berry who is a perfect choice for this style of band. They perform in the Function Suite of the Mermaid, Frogmore Avenue, Eggbuckland at 8pm on Sunday January 20. Tickets from 01752-847611.
