TORRIDGE District councillors Jane Whittaker and Barry Parsons have written a joint letter to Prince Harry, urging him to consider using the area to help host the Warrior Games, should he be successful in bringing them to the UK.

The fourth annual Warrior Games, held this year in the US Olympic Training Centre and the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, saw Prince Harry help light the cauldron before over 250 servicemen and women competed in the events.

The Warrior Games is a competition for wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans held over six days with five American teams and the British Armed Forces team.

Cllr Whittaker said: 'I read with some interest about Prince Harry's involvement in the Warrior Games and his wish to have these Games take place in Britain next year.

'We wrote to him in the hope that there would be an opportunity for the Torridge District to be a partner in the delivery of the 2014 Warrior Games.'

Cllr Parsons said the area was 'more than able' to deliver events of the calibre of the Warrior Games.

'It has a track record of supporting activities of a comparable nature and has suitable venues from which to deliver them. We've had the Atlantic Water Sports here, the Olympic Torch and of course the Tour of Britain.

'For a rural area and small local authority, we can punch well above our weight.'
