THE first match of the week for Tavistock Bowling Club men?s section was against their old adversary and namesake, Plymouth Sir Francis Drake.
It resulted in a defeat for Tavistock who lost on four rinks but managed to draw the fifth, when skip Colin Tremaine and his team of Clive Jago, Roy Gill and Geoff Cork achieved a hard fought 20-20 result. Skips Stuart Doidge 15-17, Mike Allen 13-15, Der Saunders 14-22 and Roy Northam 11-18 all lost.
On Sunday a team from Camelford visited for a mixed match. This ended in a comprehensive 103-76 win for Tavistock who won three of the five rinks played. Skip Marion Allen led her team of Gill Saunders, Geoff Cork and Ray Moore to a 31-11 victory, while skip Pat Sykes and his team of Jill Lacayo, Pat Hoar and Val Southern won 21-14.
Skip Mike Allen managed a 23-16 win thanks to his team of Ray Meneer, George Blackburn and Joan Solly, but skips Der Saunders, 14-17, and Malcolm Bloomer, 14-18, both lost.
A mixed local derby away at Okehampton ended in a 63-78 defeat for Tavistock who won only one rink. Skip John Smith and team of Ray Meneer, Geoff Cork and Gill Saunders won 27-17, but skips Der Saunders and his squad of Ray Moore, Roy Gill and George Blackburn lost 8-22 while skip Roy Northam and his team of Val Southern, Clifford Hicks and Derek Bradford were defeated 13-21.
Club captain Brian Preece led his team of Maurice Anning, Yvonne Meneer and David Perry during their 15-18 defeat.
Tavistock men?s County Trophy team faced opponents from the Tamar Club in a match in which Tavistock achieved a 89-71 winning margin thanks to skip Mike Allen and team of Pat Sykes, Phil Jury and Tony Coombs achieving a 20-11 victory and skip Malcolm Bloomer and his squad of Der Saunders, John Smith and Brian Preece achieving a 28-13 victory. Skips Roy Northam 18-22 and Eric Stevens 23-25, both lost.
The visit of a men?s league team from Lee Moor ended in a 124-62 win for the Tavistock men who won all four rinks played. Skip Roy Northam and team of Colin Tremaine, Sandy Sanders and David Perry achieved the biggest winning margin with 38 shots against their opponents? 15. Skip Mike Allen and his team of Walter Meek, Pat Sykes and Tony Coombs, won 25-17, while skip Malcolm Bloomer and his squad of Der Saunders, John Smith and Brian Preece, achieved a 32-14 winning margin. Skip, Eric Stevens, ably supported by Clive Jago, Ernie Piper and Geoff Cork, won 29-16.
The club?s open tournament takes place on Sunday, when some 26 teams compete.
