THE Second Eleven local derby was very much a tale of two halves in each innings. For the second week running, Whitchurch won the toss and invited Tavistock to bat. As last week, the decision looked a good one, as Ingram continued his superb form making run scoring difficult. At the other end, Sambells was back to his hostile best taking two vital wickets. Ingram bowled straight through returning the excellent figures of 4 for 27, as Tavistock struggled at 74 for 6. And then the tide turned. Kaminski took advantage of Whitchurch?s back up bowling and a number of dropped catches to add 104 with Rich (36) and another 50 for the eighth wicket with Neale, as he posted a deserved century. He was finally out in the penultimate over for 115 having held his side to what had seemed an improbable target of 219. Whitchurch?s reply was a carbon copy of the previous week?s affair away at Thorverton. Clapham (20) started brightly enough, but soon fell as Whitchurch crumbled to 39-5, with all five wickets going to Neale in his first six overs. Woodrow and Alford then had to consolidate, picking off runs as and when they could. Gradually, the picture brightened, as together they added 108 in 24 overs, before Alford was unlucky to be bowled by Milligan for 31. With Woodrow in full flow, an unlikely victory was still being chased with 70 needed off the final 10 overs. Woodrow completed his century, despite giving a few chances, but was out immediately after and with him went Whitchurch?s faint hopes of winning. With 40 still needed, Whitchurch opted for batting points, but fell agonisingly short of the final point, closing on 198 for 8. This week Whitchurch travel to fellow strugglers Ipplepen, still looking for their first win of the season.
