Devon Junior Cup
North Tawton 5
Honiton 12
NORTH Tawton took on high fliers Honiton who are in pole position in Devon League I.
The game started with North Tawton applying pressure on the visitors' line. But after some concentrated attacks North Tawton gave away a stupid penalty to let Honiton take an undeserved lead.
North Tawton came back in grand fashion when, following a free kick, captain Kevin Avery chipped the ball over the top of the Honiton defence to let prop forward Mike Hewitt collect and score a well deserved try.
With newly promoted brothers Gary and Michael Denis at second row and outside half respectively playing along with the other members of the team it looked as though North Tawton might snatch a surprise win. But despite good defence another silly penalty against North Tawton saw Honiton creep ahead at the interval 6-5.
After the break this exciting game flowed from end to end and North Tawton were unlucky not to score when they had a couple of five-metre scrums wasted with dropped passes.
Honiton, to their great credit, came back and despite North Tawton's best performance of the season slotted another couple of penalties to run out winners of this fascinating game.
Well done North Tawton, let us hope this could be a turning point in a mediocre season so far.
l North Tawton First entertain Exeter Saracens in the league this Saturday while the seconds are away to Saracens II, both kick-off 2.30pm.
