CALLINGTON Honey Fair is celebrating its 30th year on October 1, with plenty of family fun on offer all around the town.

The theme for this year's Lions' Club event is 'Celebrations and Anniversaries' which has been used for the children's art competition involving around 900 children and the shop window competition.

Stalls, as many as 100, will line the streets and all the honey exhibits, as well as all the art entries, will be on display in the town hall where the Lions' Club ladies will be serving up their famous honey cream teas.

Honey Fair secretary David Jones said: 'Many articles have been written on the history of the old honey fair but it seems unclear when it was first established. In 1978 local lad John Trevithick set out to re-establish the honey fair and here we are 30 years later, still going strong.'

Mr Jones said honey fair had always been a friendly, community event and local charities and organisations participated as did the churches who joined in with exhibitions. This year St Mary's Church is putting on a 'Wedding Dresses and Photographs' exhibition and the Methodist Church 'Christmas Trees and Cribs'.

Adding to the entertainment will be a large funfair and various street entertainers including a clown and travelling musician and also a town criers' competition. Refreshments will be available from the two churches and various outlets in the town.

The South East Cornwall Accordion Band will be entertaining throughout the day and Callington Town Band will finish off the day by playing outside the town hall. The church bells will then ring for an hour.

Any money raised will go to Lions' charities throughout the year. Admission to the event is free.
