LAST week was a big week for Tavistock Bowling Club, which saw both its Open Tournament take place and a visit by the president of Devon Bowling Association and his select team for a match against the men?s section. Sunday?s Open Tournament was sponsored by local businesses and involved some 16 clubs from Devon and Cornwall. The tournament was won by the Tavistock team of Mike Allen, Anne Brown, Marlene Paramor and Norman Paramor, who were presented with their winners? cheque by tournament sponsors, Simon Luke of Morris Bros. Earlier in the week the president of Devon Bowling Association, Eddie Edworthy, had visited Tavistock with his ?select? team, drawn from clubs across Devon to play a Wednesday afternoon match against Tavistock men?s section. The president?s men won the match 118-99, with the Tavistock men winning two and losing four of the six rinks. Tavistock skips results were: Roy Northam (Brian Preece, Mike Silcox and Geoff Cork) won 23-19 and Mike Allen (Ernie Piper, Harvey Leach and Barry Chappell) won 23-13. Ron Cooper (Stuart Doidge, Gerald Worth and Laurie Smith) lost 14-17 and Norman Paramor (Pat Sykes, Gordon Northey and Clifford Hicks) went down 13-23. George Blackburn (Ray Meneer, Charlie Cummings and Vic Stacey) lost 8-27, and Malcolm Bloomer (John Smith, Albert Townsend and Frank Welch) lost by one shot when going down 18-19. Wednesday also saw two Tavistock ladies? rinks face Kingsteignton in the inter-club competition played at Plympton. Tavistock lost on both rinks, with skip Yvonne Meneer (Betty Browse, Shirley Blackburn and Sue Silcox) going down 17-27 and Marion Allen (Hazel Lovell, Anne Browne and Marlene Paramor) losing 22-12. Earlier in the week the men?s section fielded two rinks in the Foxland Trophy competition, with one rink playing on the Tavistock green and the other at Plymouth Unity Park. Tavistock lost both rinks with the home rink of Mike Allen (Malcolm Bloomer, Norman Paramor and George Blackburn) going down 12-17 and the away rink of Roy Northam, (Clive Jago, Brian Davis and Ernie Piper) losing 19-22. The touring team Dorset Bowlers visited Tavistock on Thursday for a four rink triples match and lost 58-92, after the Tavistock mixed team won three of the four rinks played. Skip Norman Paramor (Shirley Blackburn and Joan Northey) won 23-13. Betty Browse (Walter Meek and Gordon Northey) lost 16-19 after scoring on only six of the 18 ends. Ron Cooper (Catriona Meek and Harvey Leach) won 27-12 and Mike Allen?s team of Jenny Aldridge and Wendy Bloomer won 26-14 with their opposition scoring on only six of the 18 ends. The Mederia Bowling Club, Exmouth, was the venue for Friday?s away match, which Tavistock lost 99-116. Tavistock skip, Clive Jago (Ernie Piper, Marlene Paramor and Barry Chappell) won 26-11 and Malcolm Bloomer (Ray Meneer, Val Powell-Thomas and Shirley Blackburn) won 24-18. Losing skips were John Smith (Jenny Aldridge, Bob Powell-Thomas and George Blackburn) (20-21); Roy Northam (Bill Ashe, Wendy Bloomer and Brian Preece) (13-30) and Norman Paramor (Yvonne Meneer, Vic Stacey and Anne Browne) (16-26).
