OKEHAMPTON Library is inviting children to launch into orbit this summer for an intergalactic adventure.

Fun and practical space-themed events will be taking place at the library throughout the holiday period to link with this year's 'Space Hop' Summer Reading Challenge.

Now in its 12th year, the biggest national reading initiative will blast off with incentives and activities to encourage children to read at least six books during the summer break.

Children aged between four and 12 years old can follow the crew of the starship Ex Libris as they try to set up the first library on the moon. They can pick up a membership card and a poster on which they can log their reading progress from their local library.

As well as prizes including collectable stickers and glow in the dark wristbands, there will be certificates and medals for the space-cadets who complete the challenge and touch down on the lunar landing!

Workshops are being held throughout the holidays — tickets for workshops are 50p and must be purchased in advance.
