ORNAMENTAL church bosses will be the topic of discussion at next week's meeting of the Okehampton Local History Society.

Sue Andrew will discuss the carved ornaments, made of stone or wood, at 7.30pm in the Ockment Centre on Wednesday March 14.

Sue has recently had a thesis on late medieval roof bosses in Devon published by the University of Plymouth.

Because of their relative inaccessibility they escaped the widespread destruction during the Reformation and most of them have never been recorded.

Last month's well-attended meeting heard Jane Marchand give an engaging talk on Dartmoor's archeology and the work carried out by the National Park Authority to prevent the risk of damage to its thousands of historic sites.

Meetings of the society are held on the second Wednesday of each month in the Ockment Centre at 7.30pm.

New members are welcome and anyone interested should contact Malcolm Francis-Laing on 01837 840158. Non-members can attend meetings at a charge of £2 per person.
