THIS autumn sees the launch of a new conservation project for the Dartmoor Preservation Association, as volunteers clear a section of Devonport Leat, between Yelverton and Clearbrook.
The volunteers will be clearing scrub from the inside of the leat and its banks.
As well as trees, which include hawthorn, there are stretches of gorse and brambles to be tackled.
In some areas, the growth of scrub has made the leat almost invisible, and impassable to walkers.
the purpose of the work is to preserve the archaeology of the leat and improve access — the project is being supported by Dartmoor National Park Authority.
Devonport Leat was build in 1801 and carried water from the West Dart, the Cowsic River and the Blackabrook.
It is estimated that it will take some two years to clear a two kilometre section of the leat.
New volunteers are always welcome — tools are provided by the DPA but you should bring a packed lunch and wear appropriate clothing.
The next clearing day is scheduled for September 2. Please call 01822 890646 on Monday or Wednesday for more information and to check the clearance day schedules. Anyone interested in finding out more can also go to http://www.dartmoorpreservation.com">www.dartmoorpreservation.com
