Many of the players shown were outstanding sportsmen who served the club for a great number of years. An example of such loyalty would be Eric Furse who played his first game for Okehampton while still studying at Okehampton Grammar School in 1919. He went on to skipper the side, playing in every position except goalkeeper — and so in one of his final games he played in goal for the second team before retiring in 1956.
Eric, Les Turner and Winkle Medland, all named in the photo, also served in the 'C' Company of the 6th Devons during the war, with Les and and Eric being commissioned and Les rising to the rank of captain.
Another photograph of the team taken in 1955 on Saturday November 12 has now got all the names listed.
All the players for the 1955 team were proved to have been excellent all round athletes.
Bert Hatten, the club linesman enjoyed his role so much that he later took his exams as a referee and became a class one respected referee and finally an assessor with a reputation for always being immaculately dressed and prepared for the part.
