WALKHAMPTON Show was a great success despite poor weather in the weeks leading up to it. Judges remarked on the high standard.
Competition for prizes was strong with Malcolm McMahon taking the main prizes in the vegetable classes as well as winning the Lord Roborough Cup for most points in the show.
George Eggins was a close second in the vegetable classes and had one of the most outstanding exhibits, a parsnip 41 1/2? long, included in his exhibit for best collection of vegetables.
The cup for most points in flower classes was won by Wendy Swinburne who also won the cup for most outstanding floral art exhibit.
Other cup winners were Dorothy Eggins for best flower exhibit and the Ted Whitehead cup for best container of mixed garden flowers; J Mercer for best foliage plant; Mrs A Cartwright, the cookery cup; G McPherson the wine cup; Mike Dobson the cup for best pasty. This is the third year running that the pasty cup has been won by a man!
Other adult cup winners were Ann Vass, M D?Oyley, V Fitzsimmons and Angela Dawe.
The children?s classes were well supported with new cup winners this year, Caroline Tuck winning the junior cookery cup and Jim Knight cup, Melanie Brown the cups for most points in junior classes, miniature garden cup, best item made from small vegetable and best collection of mixed grasses. Other winners in the children?s classes were Freya Semken and Hattie McCann.
The show was supported by the local cricket club?s match and the fun day organised by the play park committee. Thanks go to all committee members and other supporters who helped stage the show.
