OKEHAMPTON is making steady progress in the race to gain high-speed internet access for the town?s exchange.

Following a campaign launched by the Times last month, Tavistock has already reached the crucial 300 target of registrations of interest in the upgrade to Broadband.

Now Okehampton stands at 186 registrations.

Pierre Morel, head of ICT at West Devon Borough Council, said it was pleasing to see the total steadily moving up and urged people in the borough to register their interest in the upgrade if they have not already done so.

To register, go to http://www.bt.com/broadband">www.bt.com/broadband and follow the on-screen instructions.

Broadband not only means faster access to the internet ? it allows users to work on-line without blocking their normal phone line.

And the MCTi Okehampton Locality Group have formed a working group to help secure broadband internet access for the benefit of the local community.

Michael Saunby of Okehampton MCTI said: ?The group is investigating methods of provision for those in the town and the rural hinterland ? more information can be found at the Okehampton MCTi website at http://www.okehampton.com">www.okehampton.com

He added that Broadband access has already been obtained by Okehampton College and big commercial companies in the area ? but the group wanted the upgrade to be available for ordinary consumers.
