West Devon Cup
Kelly College U14 XV 31
Devonport High School for Boys U14 XV 14
THIS match was eagerly anticipated, following the single point winning margin for Kelly at the teams' meeting at Devonport two weeks before. The game started with the players making nervous handling errors. An early score by Kelly pupil Harry Wyatt left the DHS side with their heads down.
A further score by George Hall, a player recently converted to a forward after earlier games at centre, gave Kelly a 12-point advantage and this was followed by Doug Willats going over for a try after powerful play by the Kelly College forwards.
This put Kelly 19 points up at half-time.
Soon after the break, Wyatt went over for a second score and 85 points for the season so far and Sam Twaites scored to take his personal tally to 40. Guy Jedwab converted three of the tries, the best kick being from the left-hand edge of the pitch.
With ten minutes to go, Devonport finally broke the Kelly defence to score under the posts. They scored again with three minutes remaining.
