CAT OWNERS are being offered the chance to take advantage of a free neutering service for their pets running as part of Cats Protection Week.

Starting on September 11, the local branch of Cats Protection will be launching a four-week scheme whereby owners on low incomes with cats aged six months or more can apply for support in neutering their pet.

Neutering of all cats not required for breeding is the only long-term answer to the ever-increasing number of unwanted cats and kittens.

Cats Protection rescues and rehomes 60,000 of these unfortunate creatures on an annual basis.

Cats are prolific breeders. One unneutered female cat can be responsible for up to 20,000 descendants in just five years.

Neutered cats offer the pet considerable health benefits and neutered male cats, for example, are less likely to wander off and sustain injuries through fighting or become victims to road traffic accidents.

The charity says it hopes a good take-up of the offer of free neutering for cats of eligible applicants will help them achieve their goal of ensuring that every cat and kitten has a safe and loving home.
