A FORMER West Devon student will undertake the project of a lifetime this month when she joins a team going to Sri Lanka to help rebuild homes destroyed by the devastating tsunami. Emma Reddington will travel to Hikkaduwa, in south-west Sri Lanka, with a team from the charity Habitat for Humanity. The project has been sponsored by Emma?s company, Serco, the international public service group, who are sending 70 employees from all over the globe to take part in the community challenge. Emma grew up in Okehampton and attended Okehampton Primary School and Okehampton College. She left the area after completing her A-levels but still has many friends and family there. She said: ?It is staggering to realise that the materials to build a house only cost £250 for a Sri Lankan family. ?The house will be high-quality, durable, environmentally-friendly and a team of five of us should be able to build it within a week.? Emma?s company, which has already donated more than £200,000 to the tsunami relief effort, is covering the costs of travel, accommodation and vaccinations for the volunteers. Emma now needs to raise the funds to pay for the materials to build a house. Serco has ensured the overhead costs of the programme are covered ? from now on every penny donated will pay for the building materials required to give a family back their home. Emma has spent the last month organising fundraising events, with a personal goal of raising £1,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Most of the fundraising has taken place in Godalming, Surrey, where Emma now lives, but she is coming back home to stage a pub quiz evening at the Tors in Belstone so that friends and family in Devon can support her effort. Emma said: ?Having a pub quiz means that people can come along for a nice evening out and at the same time help me to raise funds for a Sri Lankan family who lost their home in the tsunami.? The charity pub quiz takes place at the Tors on Sunday, June 12. For more information contact the pub on 01837 840689. ?The good thing about this project is the fact that it is also helping to kick-start tourism back into the region, Sri Lanka?s main industry. The Sinhalese are calling the drop in tourism the second tsunami,? she said. Emma is having to get fit in preparation for the physical aspect which will involve eight-hour days labouring on site in the 30 degree heat. She and her team will be directed by a local site manager and will be working with the family who will inherit the house. Emma has already raised more than £400 to buy bricks and mortar.
