A HATHERLEIGH schoolgirl has decided to pay tribute to a friend who died from cancer by holding a fund-raising event in her memory in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Stacey Balsdon, 13, a pupil at Okehampton College has organised a coffee evening in Hatherleigh Town Hall on Wednesday, September 24, from 7.15pm.

Stacey said lots of her friends and their parents had been offering to help by donating prizes or selling draw tickets.

'I have had a really good response. A lot of my friends have been really supportive,' she said.

Stacey said she had come up with the idea of a coffee evening because she wanted to do something to raise money for a cancer charity in memory of her friend who died of cancer at the age of 13 in August.

Girl guide Stacey is also hoping organising the event will count towards her Baden Powell Challenge.

She has already taken part in charity events for Red Nose Day and Children in Need.

Everyone is welcome to go along on the night and raise a cuppa for charity.

Stacey says there will be plenty to do besides, with a bric-a-brac stall, a grand draw and games for children.

Anyone who wants to donate a prize or make a contribution to Stacey's coffee evening can contact 07876 788985.
