PROPER Job in Chagford are offering people a chance to become involved in the construction of a landmark low impact community building on the edge of Dartmoor this weekend.

The award-winning community organisation is about to enter the final stages of building a straw bale barn to house the accumulation of reusable and repairable items and materials that are increasingly coming its way.

Last year Proper Job ran a series of courses alongside the building of the barn to give people an opportunity to learn the techniques involved in this unusual method — and now there is another chance to find out what it is all about.

Proper Job developed out of the Chagford Community Composting Project with an overall objective to 'reuse waste through community resourcefulness.' It was supported initially by European and Rural Development Commission funding, Devon and West Devon Joint Recycling Committee and West Devon Borough Council.

More recently thanks to a National Lottery grant of £131,000 and a Government grant of £28,000 for sustainable projects, Proper Job has been able to acquire a permanent site for the extended activities of 'Reuse, Repair and Compost' and appoint a research and development worker. The straw bale barn is being built on this new site.
