A HYMN writer and evangelist of the late 19th century was welcomed to Fairplace Church, Okehampton, last Sunday.
Members of the church said they were honoured to receive their special guest, Ira D Sankey, whose collection of 'sacred songs and solos' have been well-used and popular in many churches.
Mr Sankey was interviewed by church member Derek Allin. Together they retold the story of Mr Sankey's life and invited the congregation to sing some of his hymns, as well as ones which had influenced him during his life.
Members of the church choir, assisted by the choral society, directed by John Holland, led the singing.
Fairplace Church will be hosting an Advent carol service on the first Sunday in Advent, when everyone is invited to attend and prepare for the season of Christmas.
