MODERN penthathlete Heather Fell from Tavistock is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Kate Allenby and make it all the way to the Olympics. Heather, 24, is competing in her second World Cup event this week in Moscow since returning from injury, and is keeping her fingers crossed she will make it into the British team for the European Championships in June. The former Kelly College pupil started competing in the modern penthathlon at the age of 18, having gone through the Pony Club tetrathlon circuit. She is following the same route as Tavistock's Kate Allenby who was a bronze medallist in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. 'We share a lot in common in that we both went to Kelly College and took part in pony club tetrathlon,' she said. 'Kate's mum even taught me to shoot.' The modern pentathlon consists of fencing, shooting, swimming, riding and running, and at Britain's World Cup event at Millfield School in Street recently Heather came 15th out of 64 international athletes from 27 countries. She had fourth placing overall from the British competitors. Heather's first place in the French Open in Paris has helped her points score towards making the British team. Only the top four in the country are selected for the European Championships. With a degree in physiotherapy, Heather is putting her career on hold to concentrate her energies on her sport. She also works part-time at a local pub. A former junior world champion, the penthathlete has returned to form in the last year and is training with coaches from Kelly College and Plymouth: 'I moved to Bath to train full time after finishing my degree but battled with injury the whole time I was there, which was two years,' she said. 'I returned home a year ago and have been working with local clubs and coaches and things are going really well at the moment.' Her ultimate ambition is to take part in next year's Olympics in Beijing.
