AT the recent Devon Restricted Badminton Tournament a number of players from BAT's Badminton Club entered.

In the men's singles, David Harrington gained a bye in the first round but lost out in the second 15-5, 15-6 to one of the eventual semi-finalists.

In the ladies' doubles competition two pairs entered from BAT's Badminton Club. Tamsin Woodroffe and Elizabeth Rae were unfortunate to come up against another county pairing from the under 17 squad.

After some hard work in the first game, which went the way of the other pair 15-10, Tamsin and Elizabeth found points hard to come by when the other pair turned on the pressure, taking the second game 15-4.

Susie Povey and Frances Ward, in the first round of the ladies' doubles competition, came up against an Exeter pairing who tested them to the limit with hard and prolonged rallies. Susie and Frances slowly overcame the pair and finally took the match 15-10, 17-14.

In the second round Susie and Frances came up against a pair from the top club in Plymouth and District Badminton League. After giving the Plymouth pair a scare to begin with when Susie and Frances went ahead in the first game the Plymouth pair settled down and took the match 15-8, 15-2.

In the mixed doubles competition, David Harrington having been unable to contact his first choice of partner played with Tamsin Woodroffe. In the first round they came up against a strong pair from Exeter and had no answers to the power play going down 15-0, 15-1.

The other pair from BAT's in the mixed doubles competition was Alan Berry and Elizabeth Rae. In the first round they came up against a pair from the under 17 squad and with Elizabeth also a member of the squad she was determined to show the other players what she could do.

At the start of the first game Alan and Elizabeth opened up a six-point lead then settled to take a comfortable victory 15-10, 15-4. In the second round Alan and Elizabeth came up against England ranked Matthew Corby who had just won the Devon Restricted Doubles Title with his brother, and his experienced partner from Exeter.

Both Alan and Elizabeth were determined to make the other pairing work hard for their win and were pleased repeatedly to win back serve time and time again but were unable to turn their serves into points.

They lost 15-0, 15-2 but came away from the match with their heads held high having played their best.
