A SPECIAL event highlighting the work of a charity which promotes understanding of head injuries was held at the Winsford Centre at Halwill Junction. Devon Headway provides information, support and services to people who have suffered a head injury, their family and carers. The open day was held to gauge the level of interest in a Headway day centre, offering cognitive therapy and help with practicalities like shopping, plus providing much needed support to carers. The event was highly successful, and was attended by users of Headway?s services, members of the Holsworthy Stroke Club and many visitors to the Winsford Centre. West Devon and Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox was one of the guests at the event ? he said there was a desperate need for services to help those with brain injuries, and their carers, particularly in isolated rural areas. Mr Cox said: ?Devon Headway does a vital job in supporting and helping those with brain injuries and those looking after them.? Mr Cox said he was ?delighted? the group was considering opening a day centre at Winsford. ?This kind of local service can make the difference between being able to manage, and finding life intolerable. I very much hope the county council will support it, so it can follow up this initial success.? Mr Cox said he had also written to the Secretary of State for Health, highlighting the absence of local provision in West Devon and the need to promote services for those with strokes and other brain injuries living in rural communities.
