?MUD, mud, glorious mud? was much in evidence at Bere Ferrers Watersports last Saturday. The event, organised by Bere Ferrers Villagers? Group at Bere Ferrers quay, was well attended. Four teams competed both in the mud and on the water in a wide variety of games involving brute force, team spirit, wellies and hitherto unknown skills. At high tide the teams engaged in a canoe race, the final battle being the greasy pole. The Chavs ? Glyn Silcock, Jamie Hicks, Luke Wilcox, Andy Neal, Frazer Blackhurst, Claire Luscombe, Nicki Rickerts, Cail Neal and Steve ? were the overall winners with 14 points. A close second was the Tamar and Tavy Gig Club. The other two teams were Bad Taste and Bere Boys. Many former local youngsters returned to the village to take part. Crab-catching was hugely popular, the joint under-eight winners of the most caught being Millie and Tracey. Daniel Clinton won the older category with 197, with Ryan Harrison catching the largest crab. Other activities included a bouncy castle, mini trampoline, space hoppers, a static motorcycle display and Butterfingers the clown. A barbecue, pig roast and bar kept everyone fed, along with afternoon refreshments provided by the Bere Ferrers WI. Stalls included the Tavistock branch of the RNLI, the Bere Alston Gardening Club?s plant stall, Bere Ferrers Villagers? Group, Friends of St Andrew?s Church, and raffles organised by Margaret Willmott. During the evening there was a disco and music from local band Good Vibrations, with fireworks organised by watersports co-ordinator Trevor Grinstead.
