A CHARITY jumble sale held at Hatherleigh Community Centre has raised £245 for a primary school in Nanyuki, Kenya.
The Angels and Petals craft group held a jumble sale to raise funds to provide a slide for the school’s playground.
The good-willed knitters have been supporting the school since last summer. It all started when craft shop owner Katrina Embling’s son Lewie volunteered with the group Projects Abroad in the summer of 2016 and after hearing his stories, the ladies decided they wanted to help.
Projects Abroad were unable to complete work started on a toilet block for the school, so the craft group raised £400 by selling hand painted hearts, so the work could be completed.
Realising just how little these children had, the ladies also decided they should each receive a teddy bear for Christmas. They sold hot chocolate at the Hatherleigh Carnival and Christmas shopping evening, which helped toward the fund and 110 bears were sent to the children.
Katrina said: ‘The children were absolutely delighted and video footage sent back shows them cuddling the bears still in their wrapping, so precious was the gift.’
Katrina and her son are going over to Kenya in July to help at the school and are taking each child a Pocket Person — which are little knitted dolls .
Katrina added: ‘The slide will be the latest edition to enhancing the children’s lives and they will be delighted. Next on the agenda are graduation robes. Graduation is a huge part of each school child’s life and they graduate from each school, starting at kindergarten.’
