FRESH local produce and a friendly atmosphere were important factors as West Devon pub the Harris Arms picked up a prestigious award last week.

The Harris Arms won the ?Country Pub of the Year? category at the Devon Life Food and Drink Awards 2004 held last Thursday at the Devon County Show.

The pub, which is situated at Portgate on the old A30 between Lewdown and Lifton, was bought in December last year by Andy and Rowena Whiteman.

The couple received the award on behalf of their staff at the pub: head chef, Tim Treseder; second chef Carl Smith; Claire; Louise; Emma; Paula; Vicky; Phillipa; Mikey; Irene; Chris and Ryan.

Andy said: ?We want to say a big thank you to all of our customers who voted for us and the judges who made the final decision.

?We see this award as a validation of the new focus of the Harris Arms ? using fresh, local produce to create ?real? food, with substance and style, cooked with imagination and flair.?
