EXBOURNE?s satellite post office, café and shop celebrated one year of successful operation on Monday March 3.

This venture operates in the village hall every Monday and Friday morning, with the help of volunteers for the serving of coffee, tea and home made cakes and biscuits, and serving in the ?shop? ? a large cupboard in the corner of the hall, and two large tables displaying a variety of everyday items from tea bags to toilet rolls.

The post office is run by Roger McLean from Okehampton Post Office.

The mainstay in the running of the operation has been Mrs Sally Hordern, assisted by others, including Mrs Margaret Brady and Mrs Margaret Weeks, and she is to be congratulated for all the hard work she has put in.

Her birthday cake in the shape and colour of a post box was a delight, both to look at and to eat.

Thanks were also expressed to the hall committee for its patient and helpful attitude, and to hall caretaker Kit Ineson.

It has been an exciting year. For fund raising a number of events have been held in the hall and the Red Lion, and the total amount raised from both these and the café and shop is well over £3,000.

In addition a large amount of planning has taken place for the eventual aim of opening a new permanent shop and post office.

The committee is awaiting the outcome of a feasibility study into the proposals.

The committee thinks its success has, in part, been helpful to Belstone, in its efforts to keep a post office running in their village, and wish the village every success.
