POLICE stations throughout West Devon are taking part in the nationwide knife amnesty until June 30 this year. The aim is to target those with knives and offensive weapons, giving them an opportunity to hand them over safely during the five-week period. Tavistock and Okehampton Police Stations will provide large secure, red knife wheelie bins in the stations? enquiry offices during the manned hours. Anyone will be able to come to the stations and dispose of any knives. No questions will be asked and no personal details need to be left. Knife crime makes up 0.75% of all crime reported in South and West Devon, and the Basic Command Unit has seen a reduction in violent crime of just under 14% between 2005 and 2006. The Home Office-run campaign hopes to educate people about the laws regarding carrying knives and the potential penalties, including a maximum of six months in prison and/or a £5,000 fine. Jim Lewis-Clarke, a Paignton-based sergeant, said: ?If this campaign manages to take one knife off the streets that could harm someone, we will be extremely happy.? People wishing to take knives to the police stations should wrap them securely, for example using tape and cardboard before leaving the house.
