South Devon Premier division Chagford 4 Waldon Athletic 1 AFTER a poor display in midweek, at championship chasing Bovey Tracey, Chagford bounced back but not until the second half of this match. Honours were even for most of the first half. Although Chagford looked the likeliest to score, their final pass or finish was lacking in quality or confidence. With a slightly unusual formation, through absences, Chagford paired Ralph and Whatley up front and pushed Mark Williams into midfield with Endacott back in defence. The defending was sufficient enough to protect their goal but there seemed a long gap between defence and attack. The remedy was found at half-time, as manager Duncan Vincent swapped Williams and Ralph, in search of a breakthrough. In just seven minutes of the restart, Chagford were two goals to the good. For the first, crisp passing from defence sent Davis to the goal-line to cross, allowing Whatley a simple tap-in. Seconds later, Williams charged down Waldon's kick-off, ran 50 yards and slotted the ball home for a deserved self-made goal. Waldon looked down but Chagford slipped in to a comfort zone and, in the 63rd minute allowed Shannon to pull a goal back. This gave the hosts a kick in the pants they needed and they secured two more goals, again within a minute of each other. 'Rew' Davis was fed a great ball by Williams and hammered the ball past an unprotected 'keeper. Williams then proceeded to bag his second and polish off Waldon. For the closing 20 minutes the game descended to a level where the visitors appeared more content to play the man rather than the ball. To Chagford's credit, they kept their heads but in the dying seconds Davis was felled by an awful challenge. l Chagford firsts entertain Kingskerswell and Chelston tonight at 6.15pm and travel to Upton Athletic on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
