Devon Cricket League E Division West Yelverton 1st XI v Roborough YELVERTON slumped to a disappointing 35-run defeat at near neighbours Roborough on Saturday. In a match played in dry and sunny conditions the absence of in-form batsman Paul Farnham, allowed left-handed early order batsman Lee Johns to make a come back into the team after a lengthy absence. Yelverton skipper Rob Guy won the toss and asked Roborough to bat on the patchy looking wicket. Roborough?s opening pairing of Goodchild (25) and Gaylard (41) started well and scored runs quickly off the first few overs with Goodchild hitting several boundaries. Yelverton made the breakthrough when Goodchild was lbw to Joel Avery. Gaylard soon followed in similar fashion and the run rate slowed during a superb spell of bowling from skipper Rob Guy. Bridgett (31) was the only other Roborough batsman to make much headway. The bowling honours were taken by Guy (3-30) and Shrivastiv (2-23) who were well backed up by Geoff Brain and Joel Avery. Roborough?s final total of 141 seemed within Yelverton?s reach. In reply, Yelverton?s Geoff Brain and Dan Vince opened the batting and made a slow but steady start with North (3-37) bowling four maidens in a row. The dismissal of Vince saw Gul Khan walk to the wicket and play some attacking shots all around the ground to up the run-rate. However, it went horribly wrong for Yelverton as wickets fell regularly and this enabled Roborough to gain the upper hand. Middle-order batsman Yunis Suleman provided some stability, scoring 19, but after hitting a huge six, he lost his wicket. It was left to vice-captain Tim Rutherford (18no) and skipper Rob Guy to salvage something and as they steadily accumulated runs with some sensible batting, Roborough?s fielders were forced into protecting the boundary as Yelverton started to close on the required total. Guy was finally bowled with the score on 106 and Roborough ran out winners by 35 runs. Rutherford was left high and dry on 18 not out. The bowling honours for Roborough were taken by Light (4-18) and Bartrop (3-34). Yelverton remain top of the division but this result has reduced their lead to 14 points with three games to go. l This week Yelverton welcome Shaldon to their Langton Park ground in Yelverton (1.30pm start). Devon Cricket League C Division Yelverton Second XI v Ivybridge YELVERTON went into their game on Saturday with hopes of a win to continue their promotion push. On a fine sunny day Yelverton won the toss and elected to field first. After achieving an early breakthroughs and restricting Ivybridge to 66-3 at the half-way stage it appeared Yelverton were in a promising position. But this was thwarted by an excellent 125 not out from Ivybridge?s Kevin Jacobs. This boosted Ivybridge?s total to 210-6 off their 46 overs. The bowling honours for Yelverton were provided by Adrian Hood, who took three wickets with his accurate, outswing bowling. In reply, Yelverton lost early wickets, and had to go about repairing some of the damage done. The revival was led by veteran Gerry Kean who held the middle order together scoring 85. Yelverton needed 70 to win off the last 13 overs, and with Keane still in it looked like the match was going to provide a tense finish. Unfortunately after Kean was dismissed the innings fell away and Yelverton were dismissed for 163. Despite the result Yelverton remain in third place and with second placed Plymouth also losing at the weekend there are only a few points separating the two sides. l Yelverton Seconds travel to Stoke Gabriel this Saturday. Moorland Bats Tamar Cricket League section B Yelverton Third XI v Tavistock Third XI YELVERTON continued their winning ways with a workmanlike win. In reply, Yelverton also struggled to score runs and it was left to father and son Kevin (20) and Matt Tamsett (22) to score the majority of the runs.
