GUNNISLAKE Football Club held its end of season presentation evening. Again, the event was excellently organised and arranged by Tracy Kelly and Dean Martin, with dinner, speeches, trophy presentations, a raffle and finally a disco all held at the White Hart Hotel, Launceston.
Chairman Keith May thanked the committee, supporters and players amongst others before passing to son Tim who, together with joint first team manager Garf Ewing and coach Mark Vernon spoke of their teams efforts this season. Reserve team manager Mark Southcott followed this with his review of his team's campaign. The reserve team finished a respectable fourth in Duchy division three thanks to a strong end to the season. Their final league record reads P24, W15 D2 Pts 47.
Gunnislake's Duchy Premier side were five minutes from winning the top league. In their final fixture Gunnislake needed a win to secure top spot and were leading one-nil only for their opponents to score in the 85th minute and hand the title to St Teath.
After an opening day defeat Gunnislake did not lose again in the league claiming 57 points from their 22 league fixtures. Only 20 goals were conceded as 71 were scored but unfortunately for Gunnislake, St Teath pipped them with 58 points. This final day league defeat came after Gunnislake had been beaten 2-1 by Torpoint in the final of the Duchy Knockout Cup. A club side had, however, won the Launceston cup defeating Kilkhampton 4-2 after extra time.
The managers presented the individual trophies. Once again Jarryd Kelly was the premier team's leading scorer. Jarryd, whose all round play was also excellent this campaign, received the players player trophy while James Grenny received the managers award after being Mr Consistent this season. Wayne Stephens was awarded the reserves players player trophy with brother in law Steve Cribb being given the managers player award. Jason Ridgemont received the leading scorer trophy.
Lewis Barber received the young player trophy.
In the chairman's award chair Keith May chose secretary Michael Kinger recognising yet another year of outstanding contribution. This award follows on from Michael receiving the Duchy league secretary of the year accolade last season.
The club is looking forward to the coming campaign when it may field a third team.
l The club's annual meeting will be held on Monday, June 28, in the Buccaneer Inn, Gunnislake, starting at 8 pm.
