THE Government?s new smoke-free legislation is to be enforced by West Devon Borough Council. The council will be tasked with enforcing the new law from July 1, when enclosed public spaces in England will become smoke-free. The newly adopted policy allows for a number of measures aimed at informing and supporting businesses to meet their legal obligations. Cllr Chis Jenkins, chair of the council?s environment and community committee, said: ?I am pleased that a sensible approach to enforcing this legislation has been agreed. ?The emphasis is on guidance and support, which will help the business community tackle the changes. At the same time, it obviously allows for enforcement action to be taken if all else fails. ?We would encourage people to contact the environmental health department now if they need advice or information to enable them to comply, before the regulations come into force.? The policy and detailed information relating to the new law are available on the http://www.westdevon.gov.uk/services">www.westdevon.gov.uk/services, or telephone the environmental health department on 01822 813600.
