A HATHERLEIGH Guide has recently returned from a two-week trip to the Netherlands meeting other young people from around the globe. Fifteen-year-old Emily Winter, 1st Hatherleigh Ranger, represented Devon Guides at an international Guiding and Scouting jamborette event hosted by the Dutch. Emily spent the fortnight under canvas near Maastricht with more than 400 young people from 13 different countries. As well as the many camp activities there were opportunities to explore the surrounding area and take part in hikes and excursions. Emily said highlights included the hike in the Ardennes, the night hike ? where everyone was dropped around 9km from the campsite and had to find their way back without a map ? and the talent show, which was won by the Devon contingent. Emily said each country also had to prepare a national dish for everyone else to share ? cucumber sandwiches and scones for Devon, with old fashioned lemonade and tea, of course. She described the trip as ?a great opportunity? and said she enjoyed meeting so many people from other cultures. She said: ?It was an amazing experience, making so many friends, both from England and all over the world, especially Turkey and Sweden?. She was delighted to be invited to go following attendance at an international experience weekend last year. Emily was grateful for the support she received from the Devon International Fund, which supports overseas guiding activities, and the Holsworthy Division and Hatherleigh Rangers who held a fundraising coffee morning tor Emily?s trip and Rangers funds. She was particularly pleased that her logo design incorporating the outline of Devon and the Devon flag was used for group clothing for the Devon guides. Emily, who attends Okehampton College, joined the Brownies when she was eight and carried on up through the ranks into the guides and the rangers. The international jamborette attended by guides and scouts from around the world has been held every four years since being established two decades ago.
