Bodmin Trophies Duchy division 4 east
Mary Tavy 3
Callington 1
MARY Tavy finished their season on a high note after recent frustrating results put an end to their championship hopes.
With three points a must to claim the runners-up position Tavy set about the game in a promising fashion. Scott Dent opened the scoring midway through the first half and Tavy were looking good for their advantage.
The second goal took some time coming as Callington had chances of their own but found the Mary Tavy defence in resounding form. Alan Grylls made the points safe as his second half rocket gave, like so many times this season, the opposing keeper no chance as it smashed into the corner of the net.
With 31 goals this season Tavy will be hard pushed to replace the retiring hit man. The third was ominous as Tavy pressed their claim and it fell to Dan Brockington with an exceptional finish from two yards to make it three.
Callington pulled one back at the death from Ben Smith but it turned out to be a sole consolation.
The game was well controlled by referee Kevin Lacey and was a fine conclusion all round to a good season.
Mary Tavy top scorers: A Grylls 31, J Coole 21, S Dent 11, S James 10, D Brockington 7, M Piper 5.
Tideford 3
Lamerton 1
LAMERTON competed their league fixtures going down to champions Tideford, an excellent young side chasing the league and cup double.
Lamerton were a goal down after 30 seconds when slack defending allowed Paul Phillips to volley home.
They gradually fought their way back and equalised when Sean Cann curled a free kick into the net.
The second half began in the same way as the first with Tideford scoring an early goal, but this time there was to be no fightback. Lamerton's form dipped and lack of commitment and discipline grew alarmingly. Tideford scored a third to wrap the game up.
So the league season ended with a comfortable top half finish but without challenging for honours which seemed attainable in the first few months.
