THE tranquility of the River Tamar at Calstock was a beautiful setting for members of Soroptimist International when they met to launch a fundraising effort for the charity Sail4Cancer. The day was hosted by Jill and David Lane, at their boathouse on the river near Calstock, with guided tours and detailed information on the industrial heritage of the Tamar Valley, which now has World Heritage Status. Jill and David loaned their sailing boat ?Louisa? so that Soroptimists could appreciate the area from the water, on a stretch of the river which was once busy with vessels linking the mining towns with Plymouth and other ports. Soroptimist club president, Hilary Preston, explained that Sail4Cancer provides sailing experience and holidays for cancer sufferers and their families. Hilary?s family has a long association with sailing activities, and she said she was looking forward to helping Sail4Cancer provide such experience for those it helps. A series of fundraising events will be held during Hilary?s year of office in support of the charity. The members of Soroptimist International are women from business and professions who meet to give service to local, national and international projects. Members of the local club come from Tavistock, West Devon, East Cornwall and Plymouth. Information is available from their website: http://www.plymsorop.org.uk">www.plymsorop.org.uk.
