TAVISTOCK Squash Club played a home game in the plate competition against Garden a team from Torpoint on Tuesday week. Tavistock recently lost a league match to them and were in defiant mood to win at home. First up was Dave Ruffell at five. Having already played his opponent Richard in the recent league game and won, got off to a shaky start losing the first game, but gained in confidence and won his match 3-2. Mike Gray played at four and started slowly, losing the first two games but came back strongly to win the third 10-9. Mike continued to gain confidence by winning the fourth, and finally won a superb match 10-9 in the fifth. The third was played by Will Crosby. His opponent, Pete, was a tricky player taking the first game, but Will came back strongly in the second 9-1. The game moved to the tense fifth, but Will?s physical and mental strength held, and he won the match 3-2. Pete Middleton, playing at two, was up against a tough opponent in Terry. Pete had lost to Terry in the recent league match, and was in no mood to have a repeat occurrence. He got off to a slow start, dropping the first five points. But this seemed to do the trick as he came through, winning the first game 10-8. Pete never looked back in the match, leaving Terry standing, winning it 3-0. The final game saw Steve Tripp, the resident number one, playing Steve Long, Garden?s number one. The first game was tight with both players jostling for position, but Steve Tripp managed to settle into his rhythm the quickest, taking the first game 9-8. Steve Long?s head seemed to drop after losing the first, as he succumbed to the mesmerising play of Steve Tripp who took the match 3-0. The team played some gritty squash and deservedly go through to the semi-finals where a juicy tie against first division opposition awaits them.
