LAST week got off to a poor start for Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club with Tuesday?s home fixture against Looe having to be cancelled due to a waterlogged green.

Matters did not pick up much on Wednesday when the men?s home league fixture against Beacon Down ended in a comprehensive (91-71) defeat for the Tavistock team who won only one of the four rinks played.

Skip Eric Stevens and his squad of Clive Jago, Norman Paramor and Ernie Piper managed a close 22-18 victory, but skip Roy Northam and his team of Colin Tremaine, Wallace Northey and David Perry lost 16-26, and skip Malcolm Bloomer with his team of Der Saunders, Geoff Cork and Brian Preece went down 15-25.

Skip Mike Allen and his team of Pat Sykes, Derek Bradford and Tony Coombs fought out a close game, before finally going down 18-22.

Thursday saw a change of fortune for the Tavistock men. The return fixture against a Mount Gould league team saw Tavistock complete the double, thanks to having won both home and away fixtures.

In May they had achieved a 76-67 victory on the Mount Gould green in Plymouth and completed the double by winning 96-49 at Tavistock, after winning all four rinks played.

Skip Eric Stevens and his team of Clive Jago, Norman Paramor and Ernie Piper achieved a 33-12 winning scoreline when their opposition failed to score on 15 of the 21 ends.

Skip Mike Allen led his squad of Pat Sykes, Derek Bradford and Tony Coombs to a 20-16 victory, while skip Malcolm Bloomer and his team of Der Saunders, Geoff Cork and Brian Preece managed an 18-14 win.

Skip Roy Northam and his team of Colin Tremaine, Sandy Sanders and David Perry won 25-17.

Friday saw Tavistock men?s team playing at home against a Plymouth and District league representative side, and for the first time in a number of years coming out on top when winning four of the six rinks played to achieve a 101-93 victory.

Skip Eric Stevens and his team of Brian Preece, Bill Ashe and Geoff Cork won 17-11, while skip Roy Northam and his squad of Clive Jago, Ray Moore and Ray Meneer managed a 20-18 victory.

Skip Mike Allen and his team of Sandy Sanders, Derek Bradford and Lionel Sims won 18-14, while skip Bert Greatrex, one of three guest players from Yelverton, led his squad of M Hellow, Wallace Northey and David Perry to an 18-11 win. But skips Colin Tremaine (14-23) and Der Saunders (14-16) both lost.

Saturday saw a coachload of players and supporters travel to Teignmouth for a mixed match which ended in a narrow 112-110 win for the home team, who won four of the six rinks played.

Tavistock skip Stuart Doidge and his squad of Hazel Lovell, Albert Townsend and Frank Welch picked up the top rink kitty after winning 27-15, while skip Betty Browse led her team of Walter Meek, Gordon Northey and Ernie Piper to a 20-16 victory, but skips Jean Flay (16-20), Tom Sharp (14-20), Roy Northam (22-23) and Rob Bowhay (11-18) all tasted defeat.

Tavistock players can look forward to gaining revenge for the defeat when the two teams meet in the return fixture scheduled at Tavistock on August 23.

The ladies? section played two matches during the week, winning one rink and losing one at each game.

Skip Marion Allen?s winning rink against Plymstock Birds secured enough points to compensate for the losing rink and enable Tavistock to win the match overall, and skip Jenny Tremaine and her squad won at City Bus to secure two league points.
