A PLANNING application to build 12 flats in Barley Market Street, Tavistock has been given the go- ahead. West Devon Borough Council's planning committee approved a revised scheme by Leadbitter, which had previously gained approval to build eight flats and two maisonettes at the site. There were concerns from members that the six parking spaces were inadequate, but they were told that in a town centre location, Government guidance stated that no parking need be provided. Planning officer Ed Persse said officers always tried to push for more parking spaces from developers but they were in a difficult position because they were not supported by the Government and appeals had been dismissed on this argument. But he did add that the council had been successful in securing 100% parking on some developments. Cllr Mandy Govier said it was applicable for cities like Manchester which had trams, trains and other good public transport systems but Tavistock was not the same: 'The parking in Old Exeter Road is atrocious and the Brook Street development has exacerbated the parking situation there,' she said.
