YELVERTON teams finished on a high in the Plymouth and District Tennis League.

The men's A team in division 2, Roger Froud, Jamie Shobrook, Phil Gasche and Paul Every — recently returned from university — won their last three matches 8-0 against Saltash, Tavistock B and Mannamead C.

They have been promoted to division 1 — the first time Yelverton have had a men's team in this division.

The team have achieved this exciting promotion using only five players. Joe Loe made a significant contribution in securing this promotion in the earlier part of the season.

The B team in division 3 finished third in the league with 48 points, and in their last match of the season Peter Smith, Tim Shobrook, Simon Murray and Terry Leonard beat Mannamead E 6-3.

The C team in division 6 finished fourth in the league, with 34 points. In the final match v Torpoint, Roger Short, back from injury, paired up with his former partner Denis Jones to win both their matches. Martin Reed and Steve Pearson won one set to give Yelverton a 5-4 victory.

Yelverton ladies' teams have also had a successful season despite several matches being postponed because of wet weather. However all matches have been completed, with the A team in division 1 finishing runners-up with 63 points to Ivybridge A, a great achievement for a small club in a very competitive league.

Helen Smith, Tizzy Shobrook, Marjorie Comeau and Denise Nixon, with Karen Gasche and Shirley Every all helped to achieve this excellent end to the season.

The final match against Ivybridge B, with Shirley pairing up with Tizzy Shobrook at short notice, resulted in an 8-2 win for Yelverton.

The B team finished the season with 48 points, in division 3, and played two matches in one week.

The match against Saltash, re-arranged from week one for the second time, resulted in a 7-3 win for Yelverton. Karen Gasche and Shirley Every won both their matches and Di Mayne partnered Ann Short at short notice to help secure this win.

In the match against the eventual winners of the division, St Budeaux B, Ann Short partnered Karen Gasche and Wendy Sharland played with Lyn Jones.

Ann and Karen played a competitive, tense match lasting two hours with two tie-breakers, only to lose in the final set against a strong No 1 pairing. They went on to win their second match in straight sets, but the final result was a disappointing 3-6.

The C team also finished the season with two matches in one week. Against St Budeaux D they brought their Sunday Evening division 4 fixture forward to 10.30am and played in blistering heat to secure a 4-4 draw.

Val White, playing her first match of the season, partnered Joy Tynan, winning one match, as did Sandra O'Sullivan and Jenny Kay.

In the re-arranged match against Liskeard Jenny Kay and Janet Strelling had a good win against the No 2 couple, winning the third and final set on a tie-breaker. The result was 4-7.

The C team finished fourth in division 4 with 45 points.

Although only one team gained promotion, it was a successful season for Yelverton. Congratulations go to all the players involved, especially to the men's A team on their exciting promotion and to Tizzy Shobrook and Helen Smith for securing most of the points for the ladies A team, and Marjorie Comeau's and Denise Nixon's dedicated efforts.

The teams will get together for a celebration dinner at the beginning of October. An end of season summer riverboat trip to Calstock has been organised by the committee on August 10 for members and friends.
