ORGANISERS of a showjumping event held at Lewdown were delighted with the success of the event, which raised more than £1,300 for a cancer charity.
The ELF Christmas Showjumping Competition at Cholwell Equestrian Centre on Sunday, December 7, attracted more than 120 competitors from all over the West Country.
The event was held to raise money for The Exeter Leukaemia Fund — a charity that supports the work of the Haematology Centre at The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. It treats the region's blood cancer victims, performs bone marrow transplants and conducts research into the causes and treatments of the disease.
The event raised in excess of £1,300, with the figure not yet finalised.
Part of the money raised will provide three digital ready televisions for the patients who spend time in the isolation rooms and the remainder going to ELF.
Cadi Roe, the organiser of the one day show, said: 'The show was organised by myself as a way of saying thank you to the haematology department and ELF, who treated my father, Graham, for acute myeloid leukaemia which was diagnosed in February 2008.
'It is true to say that without their help, he would not be here.'
Mr Roe himself, aged 68, is now in remission and spent the whole show busy at the numbers board and helping with the course changes.
Cadi, who herself rides for Tavy Valley Riding Club, thanked all the show sponsors, competitors and volunteers, Beverley and Lee of Cholwell Equestrian Centre.
'Without their help I could not have done it.
'The day was brilliant and it was an amazing experience.
'The competition was such a high standard and a lot of people put in a great effort to decorate their horses. It was fantastic and a really good atmosphere.'
Other sponsors included Bridestowe Garage, Youldens Equestrian of Bridestowe, North Park Veterinary Group, Maunder and Sons, Dee Jackson electrician, Willhayes Equestrian Support Services, Hoopers Equestrian and Equine Canine and Country Life Magazine, Barry Knox of Tack and Country, who was the course builder.
By the end of the day 298 rounds of jumping were undertaken.
Cadi said she was happy that people had been so generous to such a worthy cause.
