THE GRAVE of the sister of one of Okehampton's greatest benefactors is to be repaired by Okehampton Town Council.

The Sophia Simmons Memorial lies within the family plot in the churchyard of Okehampton Parish Church next to the grave of Sydney Simmons.

Sydney was born in the 1830s in Okehampton and spent the early years of his life in the market town, later giving it its park, castle and a number of almshouses.

Members of Okehampton Town Council on?Monday agreed that such was his contribution to the town that the family plot would be maintained now parts of it had gone into a state of disrepair.

They agreed to meet the cost of the repair to the memorial of Sophia Simmons which was £2,380.
